Version history

v12.9.2.5 Latest2026-08-20

What's New

  • You can now opt in to the pre-release update channel via Settings.

    Improved
  • Improved the way messages are inserted into the chat window to ensure smoother scrolling.

    Infrastructure
  • Added internal checks for stable version downgrades.

Maintenance release

  • Rebased on the latest upstream, with no user-facing changes.

What's New

  • Live character counter above the message field, counting the same unit bots see, for groups where a bot deletes messages over a length limit.
  • Strip tracking parameters (utm_*, fbclid, gclid and similar) from links you open and from links you paste into a message.
  • Keep drafts on this device, so text you never sent is not uploaded to Telegram's servers.
  • Confirm Telegram links: t.me and tg:// links now go through the same confirmation dialog external links use, so a tap can't join a channel or apply a proxy before you have read the address.
  • A built-in "Google FCM" entry in the UnifiedPush distributor menu, for devices that have Play Services and no distributor app installed. It carries no Google library and needs no Firebase project, is never selected automatically, and warns about what Google gets to see.
  • Copy the name of a chat, group, channel or user by long-pressing the title in its profile.

Improved

  • Search now finds chats, channels and contacts whose name is written with a decorated Unicode "font" when you type it in plain letters. Names in a real script (Cyrillic, Greek, CJK) are left alone.
  • Edited photos keep their full resolution: a crop is cut out of the original file instead of an already-downscaled copy, and a high-quality send outside an album really uses the high-quality size.
  • Less media I/O and decoding work, and several upstream slowdowns on accounts with many chats are gone.

Fixed

  • The Android 16 heads-up notification listed every unread chat instead of the chat the new message came from. The alert now carries the newest chat's own sound and importance, and the group summary stays silent.
  • A set of upstream bugs around picking, editing and captioning photos: crops that silently failed to bake and sent the original, a caption typed in the viewer and lost on send, rotation discarding the selected crop, captions following the wrong photo after reordering, zoom and video position resetting on edit, and images pasted from the keyboard skipping the editor.
  • A set of upstream crashes: deleted-user profiles with a story privacy badge, channel ownership transfer, the forward list, video covers that fail to decode, sticker segmentation on a recycled bitmap, and three list adapters.
  • A set of upstream memory leaks that kept whole chat screens alive after closing them: chat avatar and wallpaper, attach and caption adapters, the photo viewer, video ads, reaction overlays, and notification observers that were never unregistered.
  • Added a new option to use custom emoji packs and restored animations for certain emojis that were removed from the server.
  • Introduced the ability to toggle Tor and disable unified push notifications in Settings.
  • Added scope indicators to settings screens to clarify whether an option applies to the current account or all accounts on the device.

Improved

  • Enhanced the translation settings with additional operator disclosures.
